Conventional Boilers

Also known as open vent or regular boilers they have both a cylinder and a tank with a boiler heating the water at scheduled times in the day. The boiler also feeds the radiators when the timer demands it. Water is gravity fed from the water tank to the storage cylinder when required.

What is good about them?

• You can get hot water from multiple taps at the same time.

What is not so good about them?

• The hot water can run out and you will have to wait for it to reheat.
• You need to find room for the cylinder and the water tank that feeds the tank.

What type of house are they suitable?

• Homes which need to have hot water in more than one place at the same time.

Combination Boilers

More commonly known as combi boilers these are the most popular kind in the UK for central heating systems and provide heat and hot water with no need for a water tank or cylinder, where hot water is stored. The combi boiler heats the water immediately that it is required. Switch on a tap or a shower and hot water is heated and fed to the required location in the house.

What is good about them?

• You get instant unlimited heat and hot water when you need it.
• There is no need for an immersion tank in a cupboard or in your loft.
• They do not take up much space.

What is not so good about them?

• The water pressure might be reduced if you need hot water from more than one tap at a time.

What type of house are they most suitable?

• Almost any home but they are best suited for homes where there is not a lot of demand for hot water by more than one person at any one time.
